Multiple Solubility.doc

Instructions for creating a solution that is simultaneously
saturated with 4 different substances: sucrose, ammonium nitrate,
sodium acetate and potassium bromide. The resulting solution is
stable for years and quite viscous.

Analysis of Limestone.doc
Students analyze a sample of limestone to find how much calcium it
contains. Mole calculations and gravimetric methods are used.
Analysis of Zinc Tablets.doc
Students use titration techniques to
analyze a commercial tablet of a zinc supplement. They have to
decide which of several reaction equations is correct and calculate
the mass of zinc in the tablet.

Cu-Al Stoichiometry.doc
The object of this experiment is to find experimentally the mole
ratio existing in the reaction between aluminum metal and copper
(II) sulphate. Uses titration and stoichiometry calculations.
Density of CLPA Crystals.doc
An introductory lab for Chem 11.
Students determine the mass, volume (and density) of a small pellet
of cross-linked polyacrylamide (also known as superabsorbent
polyacrylamide or “water gel crystals” from Educational Innovations)
before and after the pellet swells hundreds of times larger in
water.
Density of Water-Alcohol.doc
Students determine the mass and volume of different mixtures of
water and alcohol. Gives practice in hypothesizing, accurate
measurements; find a volume contraction of the mixture.
H2SO4-NaOH Titration.doc
Students titrate a solution of sulphuric acid having an unknown
molarity with a solution of sodium hydroxide having a known
molarity.
Isolation of Caffeine.doc
Students practice numerous separation procedures as they obtain pure
caffeine from tea leaves. Does not use chloroform.
Percentage Composition.doc
The object of this experiment is to find the actual chemical
equation which governs the manner in which baking soda (sodium
hydrogen carbonate, NaHCO3) decomposes. Students must devise a
method of their own and decide what calculations will be needed.
They are given a few guidelines to help them.
Prep’n of NiSO4.doc
Students prepare crystals of nickel(II) sulphate in a series of
reactions, starting from “nickel tokens”. Involves stoichiometry
calculations.
Spectrophotometry of Cu2+.doc
The purpose of this experiment is to use a spectrophotometer to
prepare a graph of light absorbance versus concentration and use it
to estimate the unknown concentration of copper(II) ions in a
solution.
Synthesis of Cu(II) Benzoate.doc
Students gain practice in mole calculations as they prepare a sky
blue compound.
